St. Brides Hall, Belfast

Construction of a new community centre comprising sports hall, social hall, concourse areas, meeting rooms, café, kitchen, caretakers flat, snack bar, games room, toilets and changing rooms.

The building is located on a restricted site on the busy Fitzwilliam’s Avenue of the Malone Road Belfast. A

djoining properties include the local primary school, tennis club, parochial house and St. Brigid’s Chapel.

During the construction phase, many Considerate Constructor (CCS) initiatives were employed, such as using silent piling for the sheet piling with monitoring of surrounding properties and the coordination of deliveries to ensure, e.g. parents could access the primary school at peak times.

The building is partly two storey and partly three storey, of steel frame construction with pre-cast concrete floors and stairs, brick and block walls faced externally and plastered internally and timber roofs.

The contract included full mechanical and electrical services, ventilation, lifts, catering equipment, drainage systems with pumping systems etc.

The project was short listed for the Construction Excellence Awards 2006, which not only outlines the Main Contractor’s contribution to the scheme but also considers the interaction with the professional team and client.
