Coláiste Feirste - School

The extension to and refurbishment of the existing Coláiste Feirste (School) in Belfast.

The primary aim of the contract at Coláiste Feirste was to provide better facilities for the delivery of post primary education through the medium of the Irish language.

The works comprised the extension (12,100 ft2) and refurbishment of existing building (5,800 ft2) – two projects on the one site.

The new build extension comprised a combination of strip / pad and trench fill foundations, with a steel frame and part load bearing walls.

The roof was generally profiled metal cladding with aluminium double glazed windows.

Internally the building was completed to the highest specification for this type of facility.

The existing building was extensively refurbished and upgraded in line with the new extension.

Service installations included Mechanical, Electrical and Lift by nominated subcontractors.

Ancillary works included various site works, drainage, external services and other minor building works.

Upon the completion of the main contract, the school meals building was also extended and the main sewer diverted.

The site was extremely restricted with a single entrance for the contractors and the school. Careful coordination of deliveries and utility connections minimised traffic disruption, while the accurate sequencing of activities and continuous correspondance with the school's personnel allowed continuation of all classes in a fully functional school throughout the works.
