Horizon West N.I.

Construction of a new Children's Hospice, comprising four children's bedrooms, two family overnight rooms, a day room, kitchen, staff offices and additional child care areas.

Horizon West is a children’s hospice to provide respite care and support to children living with life limiting and life threatening illnesses, and their families in the west of the province.

The building is built on a site previously occupied by another house. The accommodation includes four bedrooms for children, along with two family overnight rooms, a day room, kitchen, staff offices and all of the spaces required to manage the care of children.

The building sits at the top of a steeply sloping driveway that rises through landscaped gardens. The small domestic scale elevation to the front conceals the size of the building behind. Accommodation is arranged on a L shaped plan with the communal and family spaces to the front and children’s bedrooms in a corridor leg to the rear, dug into the hill side allowing day rooms on the front wing to avail of views over Lough Erne.

The court yard created by the building provided many challenging construction activities ranging from the extensive material to be excavated and retained to the materials logistics necessary to complete the highly specified external finishes.

The project was complete on time and within budget. The Hospice featured in Perspective Magazine January 2012.
